Emerging Contaminant:
We came to learn about the latest and greatest innovative breakthroughs in the water purification industry, but all we kept hearing about was the emerging contaminants known as PFAS, or Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances.
Here’s what we learned.
PFAs chemicals started emerging in the 1940s, where they were manufactured and used in a variety of industries throughout the United States. Most commonly, PFAs can be found in clothing, non-stick coatings on pots and pans, and food packaging such a pizza boxes and microwavable popcorn bags.
Almost 100% of the world population now has trace amounts of PFAs in our blood, and here’s the kicker: they’re thought to be bio-accumulative and very persistent in the environment. This means they can’t be broken down and continue to accumulate in our bodies for life. Why are they dangerous? Though the research is preliminary, PFAs chemicals are beginning to be linked developmental deficiencies, cancers, and thyroid issues. Pregnant women are the most at risk.
EPA limits in drinking water
The EPA has classified this as an “emerging contaminant” and is the process of setting the drinking water standard for PFAs somewhere between 10 to 30 parts per trillion(PPT). States have the ability to propose policy limits on emerging contaminants, and seventeen states have elected to enact formal policies regulating PFAs. Unfortunately, Nevada is not one of them.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Although we aren’t sure the levels of PFAs in our local water supplies yet, we one step ahead of the game and we know how to remove it!
Reverse Osmosis system is certified to remove PFOS & PFAS as well as 96% of most inorganic contaminants. This is why we believe in our high quality under sink reverse osmosis systems for drinking water. We can’t rely on the EPA to tell us what’s healthy or unhealthy; for example, the agency is aware of 26 emerging contaminants that they have yet to set a setting standard for, and creating stands is an incredibly slow process.
Reverse osmosis is your safeguard insurance policy against chemicals such as these.
Sierra Springwater Maker With Centaur Catalytic Carbon is our whole house carbon/KDF treatment system that allows for enough contact time to remove contaminants such as PFAs.
