Northern Nevada’s well water has The Highest arsenic levels in the continental US. Even the Reno municipal water supplier has to “blend” its well water with water from the Truckee River to dilute the arsenic amount so it can reach EPA standards.
According to the USGS to, 56% percent of our 29,946 wells are known to contain arsenic & most of those wells exceed the EPA limit of 10 ppb.
In fact, the average well in Nevada has an arsenic level of 55 parts per billion. That’s 5 ½ times the legal limit!
Although we find arsenic in even the local TMWA water, we see the highest arsenic levels in Fallon and Fernley. Verdi, Palomino Valley, Truckee, Pleasant Valley Carson City, Gardnerville, Lake Tahoe, Virginia City also have very high levels of arsenic in their water that far exceed EPA standards
States like Wisconsin, Michigan & New Jersey have strict laws governing arsenic levels, but in Nevada there are no laws even requiring private wells owners to test for it- let alone treat it.
What makes it even worse is that you can’t SEE, TASTE or SMELL arsenic.
These highly toxic metalloids are found in the Earth’s crust; especially around volcanic activity & Earthquake areas or due to human activities like mining.
Arsenic is a neurotoxin and is bio-accumulative. Over time, it accumulates in our organs and is known to cause many types of cancer. Although the EPA limit for arsenic is 10 parts per billion, there is no safe level. New Jersey has actually lowered their acceptable limit to 5 µg/l per liter because they recognize that 10 parts per billion is too high
If they use it for rat poison, you probably don’t want it in your drinking water!
In our 26 years treating arsenic, we often are approached to remedy the water after someone is sick and has been diagnosed with high arsenic levels in their blood.
